Build Guide

Step by step to your own GrowTower

1

Print 3D Parts

Start printing the structural parts in PETG (white recommended):

  • Plant Pot (bottom container)
  • Reservoir 850 (water container)
  • Inner Shell (4x) - for the plant
  • Outer Shell Bottom + Outer Shell (3x)
  • Shell Connector (3x)
  • Filter Housing + Internal Sieve + Fan Adapter
2

Prepare Electronics

Solder components according to the wiring diagram:

  • XIAO ESP32 C6 as controller
  • Relay module for the light
  • DC-DC Buck Converters for fan & controller
  • Connect Arctic P14 PWM fan
  • Wire LED strip (24V)
3

Assemble Housing

Put the shells together:

  • Outer Shell Bottom as base
  • Stack 3x Outer Shell on top
  • Shell Connectors to glue segments together
  • Mount Filter Housing on top
  • Fill activated carbon (3-4mm pellets, CTC > 65%)
  • Mount fan on Fan Adapter
4

Flash Firmware

Install the software:

  • Install PlatformIO or Arduino IDE
  • Enter WiFi credentials in firmware/.env
  • Compile and flash firmware
  • Enable OTA updates (optional)
5

Initial Setup

Test your GrowTower:

  • Connect power (24V, 2A)
  • Open growtower.local in browser
  • Test light (ON/OFF)
  • Adjust fan speed (0-100%)
  • Program light timer

Growing Guide

Successfully grow with the GrowTower

🌱 The One-Bud Method

Ideal for the GrowTower – produces a single large main cola:

  • Use feminized seeds (no autoflower)
  • Skip the vegetation phase completely
  • Immediately after germination: 12/12 light cycle
  • Saves space and significantly shortens grow time

Why no autoflower? With limited space, you want control over size and timing.

πŸͺ΄ Substrate Mix

The right soil is crucial for healthy roots:

  • 50% soil + 50% perlite/coco
  • Or: Composana quality potting soil + 40% perlite
  • Never compress! Fill loosely
  • Alternative: Floragard TKS2 or Growmix

Important: Regular potting soil without amendments retains too much water – root rot danger!

πŸ’§ Watering

Semi-hydroponic with drip system:

  • Week 1-2: Water from top with drainage
  • From week 3: Switch to bottom feeding
  • Roots need time to establish throughout the entire pot
  • Too early bottom feeding = root rot in unrooted areas

πŸ§ͺ Fertilizer Schedule (Micro-Grow)

Use mineral fertilizer (NOT organic):

  • Week 1-3: Pure water only
  • Soil nutrients are sufficient for early growth
  • Week 3/4+: Start Compo BlΓΌte
  • Use only 25-50% of recommended dose
  • Last 10-14 days: Pure water (flushing)
  • Maintain pH: 6.0-6.3

Important: Use mineral Compo BlΓΌte, NOT Compo Complete!

πŸ’‘ Light & Environment

Create optimal conditions:

  • LED strip: 120 LEDs/m, 4000K color temperature
  • 12/12 light cycle for One-Bud method
  • Fan for air exchange and CO2 supply
  • Regulate temperature via fan speed

⚠️ Critical Watering Warning

NEVER water from above later in the grow!

  • With mineral fertilizer + bottom watering
  • Water moves up, evaporates at surface
  • Fertilizer salts accumulate at top (white crust)
  • Watering from above = salts flush into roots
  • Result: Immediate nutrient shock (osmotic stress) - fatal!

Solution: Leave the crust alone or carefully scrape off the top 1-2 cm of soil and replace with fresh mix.

Always water from below throughout the entire grow.

Important Tips

What you should definitely not forget

Critical

Salt Accumulation

With mineral fertilizer and bottom watering, salts accumulate at the soil surface (visible as white crust). This is normal - do NOT water from above to "fix" this! If it gets too thick, carefully scrape off the top 1-2 cm and replace with fresh soil.

Pro Tip

Start with Low Dose

Begin with 25-50% of recommended fertilizer dose. The soil still contains residual nutrients. Only increase if plant shows hunger signs.

Info

Flushing Phase

In the last 10-14 days before harvest, use pure water only. This allows the plant to use up remaining nutrient salts from leaves.

Important

pH Down Selection

Never use citric acid based pH down for pH correction. Use products with phosphoric acid like Canna pH- Bloom.

Pro Tip

Substrate Mix

Use 50% soil + 50% perlite for excellent drainage. This prevents root rot while maintaining moisture for the wick system.

Note

Why Mineral Fertilizer?

For bottom feeding, mineral fertilizer is essential. Organic fertilizers can cause odor issues and don't work well with this watering method.
